Dusk is Back for 2011

2010 was a big year for Dusk. We performed in New York and Chicago and Austin. We received a nomination for the B. Iden Payne Award and placed 5th in the Austin Chronicle’s Top 9 Creative Arts Listing for the year.

This year Dusk: Improvised Tween Erotica was invited to perform in Atlanta at the Black Box Comedy Festival. So we've decided to gear up by doing four special fundraiser shows in Austin. We've added two new cast members: Colin Bates and Liz Brammer. And we are joined by original cast members Michael Joplin and Kyle Traughber. To say the least this has been a shimmering short season.

Chicago Sun Times picks Dusk as a Festival Favorite

http://blogs.suntimes.com/ourtown/2010/03/chicago_improv_festival_announ.html

The beauty of improv is its unpredictability -- but sometimes, you want to have at least a little information before jumping in. This week's announcement about the lineup for the 13th Annual Chicago Improv Festival (April 19-25) offers just that. Some key numbers:

  • 65. The number of acts performing at this year's fest. Our favorite at first glance is Dusk: Improvised Tween Erotica (from Austin, TX). See the full schedule here.
  • 38. That's how many Chicago ensembles are included in that number. Especially intriguing: the Rattlesnake High School reunion show.
  • 24 and 8. The number of different cities and countries, respectively, that the rest of the acts hail from. Boom Chicago All-Stars!
  • 12. The number of locations for this year's events, including Apollo Theatre, Annoyance Theater, the Athenaeum, Chemically Imbalanced Theater, ComedySportz, Gorilla Tango, IO Comedy Theater, Laugh Out Loud, Martyrs, The Playground and The Second City.
  • 3. The number of recipients of the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. Harold Ramis, Dick Schaal and Severn Darden will be honored at 7 p.m. on April 21 at the Second City ETC theater. Susan Messing (Improviser of the Year) and Improvised Shakespeare Co. (Ensemble of the Year) will also be getting awards.

Tickets for the festival will go on sale April 1 at www.chicagoimprovfestival.org.

Punch It!

Is there anything more satisfying than pretending to beat the ever loving life out of anyone?  I love stage combat. It was one of my favorite classes in college and I auditioned for any show that involved punching, kicking, falling, leaping or throttling.

The great thing about Dusk is that, well? It's about supernatural creatures as well as humans and supernatural creatures have supernatural abilities.

We've been working hard at Dusk rehearsals coming up with all kinds of sweet, sweet special effects, fight moves and physical mayhem.  I won't spoil it for you lucky audience members, but just know we are gonna rock your world.

Now excuse me while I go look for more people to pound on!  Just for practice! I swear!!

Undying Love

Hey Dusk Fans! It's Julie, here with a question: Love. Does it ever die?

Not if you are immortal. I think that's one of the tensions which draws fans to the vampire mythology. It may (or may not) be a trope more biased towards women, but really....the sexy undead one loves you.

For. Ev. Er.

And that can be a very sexy idea for a lot of folks out there. Plus the eternal youth thing is cool.

Seems like I've always been drawn to the world of vamps. From the original Dracula to terrible TV movies to Buffy and onwards towards Laurell K. Hamilton, there are vamps for every taste. And Twilight, with Edward and Bella (and Jacob, let's not forget as werewolves are a whole other story) is no exception.

I will say though, that I'm especially drawn to characters like Spike from Buffy and James from Twilight. I totally dig the bad-ass vamps who dress to the nine's and kill with style. Maybe that's another reason so many of us love vampire stories-after spending most of the day being good, we get to be really bad, even if for a little while.

This show, Dusk, is going to be amazing-funny, sexy, violent, campy, wild, smart and fierce.

You are gonna love it. Forever.
